What is operations research? Operations research covers a variety of different principles in business such as analyzing, planning, problem solving, forecasting, and researching (obviously), in nearly every field. Operation research in the application of advanced analytical methods to make better, and smarter decisions. Those who do enter such a field should have a good understanding of software programs such as SAS, LINDO, mathematics, calculus, statistics, economics, and linear algebra.

When a project is outlined, the goals of the project must be met, so it is the job of the operations research professional to find the best solutions to achieve the goals. Since an operations researcher is involved in every aspect of a business, they must be proficient and knowledgeable in all fields. Operations research professionals apply their analytical skills to their field of interest to help run the business more effectively. After the operation researcher comes up with the solution, they will present their solutions to the managers. Then, make the necessary adjustments if needed.

Simply, one of the functions of an operations research professional is listening to a problem and then formulating the solution to solve the problem. This could be easier said than done because not all business problems have the answers, and when they do it can be too late because the business has already failed. Businesses provide different products and services. Each problem will differ from the other and operation researchers have to create different solutions.



Many operation research professionals earn a master's degree in operation research or in a related field. Operation research is vague, so it is vital to decide what field one is interested in and apply those operation research skills to specific occupation. There are always opportunities for advancement when it comes to operation researchers such as being promoted from analyst to senior analyst. Those who are interested in teaching may become operation research professors.

Businesses are not the only ones who use operation research professionals. The armed forces use them frequently to analyze effective ways in military weapons. The military was the first to use operation research professionals on a regular basis. The military relies on the technology, so it is extremely important that operation researchers are knowledgeable of latest analytical techniques.

There are currently around 60,000 operation research professionals and that should increase to around 65,000 over the next few years. Operations research professionals are expected to grow over the next decade because businesses want to run smoothly. During economical stressful periods, companies cannot afford unnecessary spending and must be as cost-effective as possible by maximizing profits, and increasing productivity. Conversely, the failing businesses that are too far in the deep end and cannot recover, will affect operation research professionals negatively. Businesses can learn from the mistakes of others, and apply what they have learned to ensure the same fate does not happen to them.

One of the benefits of being an operation research professional is the transition from one occupation to another. Operation research knowledge will allow for a variety of occupational transitions with relatively ease for most.

There are organizations that specialize in operation research which are Military Operations Research Society and Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences or INFORMS. The purpose of these organizations is to aid those who are interested in an operation research careers and provide the necessary training.

The average salaries will depend on the type of the operations research professionals but will range typically from $40,000-$110,000 per year. Those who do have an operation research career in the Federal Government will earn an average of $92,000 per year.

Operation research is not an exact science. It does require those who have excellent communication skills to explain in detail their proposals. Being able to meet deadlines and working under pressure is the norm for operation research professionals. This type of work is very important because it allows those who can, to do, and those who cannot, to learn. What does that mean? The job of operation research professionals is to provide solutions to problems or if a business is good, make the business great. With the economic state, the economy can use all the operation research professionals available.

A career in such a field will provide those who do enter operation research with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Solving business problems and giving them the opportunity to get back on track becoming successful is critical in preventing economic downward spirals. Companies' fate is in the hands of the operation research team or an individual. Coming up with theoretical ideas is good, but applying these theories in the real world is vital for employees to keep their jobs.
