The operations research field was actually first developed by the military, but operations research is now used in a variety fields beyond the military. As such, while a career in operations research was once based mostly around deploying radar and searching for enemies effectively during war, today this is not necessarily the case.

The Job Responsibilities of an Operations Research Specialist

It is important to note that a person employed in the operations research field was never simply an asset used by the country during wartime. In fact, when the country was not at war, a person employed in the operations research field was busy researching and analyzing possible options for future wars. Generally, to do this, the operations research professional would use a method of statistical analysis involving a variety of computer programs. In addition, the operations research specialist would use various math skills to analyze the given situation.



Nowadays, there are actual non-military-based operations research jobs available. In quite a few of the larger organizations, there are many employees working as operations research specialists. Some of these larger businesses have complex operations that require a high level of education and knowledge.

Some operations research specialists need to find the best way to manage the money, people, equipment, and materials of a business. Basically, it is the operations research specialist's job to find better ways to keep costs down while not cutting down on the quality of the business. As such, the researcher is frequently considered to be the “problem solver” for the business. If an issue arises with meeting deadlines, it is up to the operations research specialist to figure out the best way to handle the situation.

Requirements for Becoming an Operations Research Specialist

First and foremost, businesses look to hire someone who is capable of handling the situations that are thrown at them and who won't crack under the pressure and stresses that can be directly related to the job. It is necessary for a person considering a job as an operations research specialist to have a college degree in the field. Furthermore, having a background in computers is crucial when applying for a job in this field.

A person interested in becoming an operations research specialist would ideally have a master's degree in operations research. Although a bachelor's or master's degree specifically in operations research is the most desirable, having a degree in mathematics, economics, or statistics may also be enough to obtain a job in the field.

After obtaining employment as an operations research specialist, it is necessary to continue taking coursework within the field. As technology changes, the operations research specialist must stay on top of these changes. Knowing all of the latest information will keep the operations research specialist's skills sharp, which is essential for success within the field.
